South Dakota is freezing cold in the winter. It is flat and has very high winds. Last year, temperatures fell below minus 40 degrees F. Many Native American families living on the reservation cannot heat their homes. During these extremely cold winters, people suffer; especially infants and the elderly. Some even die. There is no natural gas on the reservation. Some families use propane to heat their homes, but propane is not affordable for many as it costs 6-7 dollars per gallon. Electricity is available but too expensive for most families. We needed six 20-inch gas powered chain saws (Poulan Pro PP 5020AV) to take to two communities on the Pine Ridge Reservation from September 12-21 and volunteers to cut wood to provide fuel, especially for the elderly and single mothers.
